So make a stack of them at home and bring them in for us to collect! They go directly back to local breweries who reuse them :) So you're not only diverting waste, but you're also supporting local small business!
CLEANED PLASTIC DEO TUBES
I know deodorant is not an easy product to shop, and not one works for everyone. So some people, zero waster or not, just have their go to deo... and unfortunately it comes in plastic. Well, thankfully, I found the perfect reuse for the tubes, so they are now on the collection list! We are only asking for the cylinder ones, not the oval. You know the ones that are kinda like a push pop.. but for deodorant, and they twist to push the Deodorant up a tube? Please empty, and clean them with soap and water. Labels are fine. The future use will be for customers who want a container for the 1oz unhoused No tox life deo that we carry at the shop. Just push the no tox life deo puck into an old tube, and voila! you have your plastic free refill with no need for new housing. It helps for those who don't like to apply deo with no tube and it makes it more travel friendly. Let's be like crabs and find a shell! trade and borrow and barter and share. :)

New waste diversion product! Egg cartons - a dozen or half dozen cartons are best! tinyshop is collecting them for an amazing non profit that collects items to redistribute called The parlor! The cartons are just one of many things we plan on collecting for Penny and her crew! These egg cartons will go to food pantries that buy or get eggs donated by the crate and need to repackage into a household size in order to hand out. thanks in advance! AMBER HEALTHADE BOTTLES / $1 credit for removed labels
We're now collecting Health-Ade bottles for future reuse! If the label is fully removed, we’ll give you $1 per bottle. If not, no deposit—but we’re still happy to keep them out of the waste stream. We get that some folks enjoy peeling labels, while others prefer to skip it—either way works for us! Want to give it a go? Fill the bottle with hot water and set it in a container of hot water, covering the label area. After 5-10 minutes, the label should peel off more easily. For any sticky residue, mix oil and baking soda into a paste, let it sit on the gooey areas for a few minutes, then scrub it away.
Clean, sticker free lush pots
Bring your empty Lush pots in washed and sticker free and we will buy them from you for $1/pot (sample size not included) But we will take those though too. Here's the plan: after we collect enough of these pots, we will start putting our barred hair goods and other things in there! And while we love lush for their package free products, those nice black pods, seem to be a bit of a waste stream. After talking to some employees the answer is not 100%, but it seems that they are recycled. Surely not washed and reused. It takes a lot more energy to ship and recycle than to wash and refill. And if you know about recycling, black plastic is very difficult and costly to process, so it is actually often not recycled at all! So stop wishcycling and bring them to tinyshop to start a new closed loop stream!
Measuring scoopers in various sizes
We are collecting scoopers (you know, those ones you see in protein powders and other supplements) to offer to customers for reuse! They would be helpful for laundry powder and oxygen brightener for example! This way we don't have to buy new. And because we all probably have a few extra ones laying around what are destined for the landfill! Any material and size is fine :)

So this weekend, an awesome tinyshop customer came in and showed me a great tinyshop jar hack! He reuses bottle sleeves from liquor stores to protect his jars from clanking and breaking in his bag! I love this idea because it is upcycling, reusing, light + useful! So yes, we are collecting any surplus bottle sleeves so we can offer them to customers for transit! It's an amazing alternative to using a tinyshop tote. Hooray for community for ingenuity + for like minds :)
USED AND EMPTY SPICE JARS
looking for clean, glass spice jars! No discounts given for this, just a place to donate and close the loop! So bring in any empty, extra spice jars you have at home. We are collecting them to be offered at the shop when it opens. They will be available to to customers who need "new" jars for their bulk spices :) *ideally the jars are de-stickered, clean and glass! This medium-coarse grind of heirloom Bloody Butcher corn ( which is a red kernel "dent" corn) is stone-milled just right for polenta, grits, or hearty cornbread. If you soak it, the texture will soften, and you can use it on the stovetop as well as baking. It was first named in the 1800s but has roots in Native American agriculture. It has fresh, sweet, corn flavor and is a great ingredient for local, North American, rustic dishes. Yum!

ORGANIC GLUTEN FREE PASTA MADE IN ITALY
This pasta is so yummy + I was so excited to bring it to the shop after I sampled it....... but when it arrived... well first... its made in Italy, which is sweet for it's authentic nature and for ingredient quality... but its a far way to come. But the bigger offense, is the bag size it came in. Something like 4.5lb bags, when I ordered 22lbs in bulk. So instead of one big bag, each pasta type was packed in 4 parts... ouch. I'd prefer a paper box... so while it's here, enjoy it- it is some craveable pasta. *cook at 7-10 minutes in boiling water.

They are a very small business that primarily supplies direct to restaurants. You can taste the power and care in every single spice. They are made from high quality, whole ingredients and milled to order. *A half jar will fill up a standard spice bottle, and a whole jar will fill up about two. If you keep them in the tinyshop jar, they are nice as is and acts as a great pinch bowl and measuring with a tsp is easy with the wide mouth! This pasta cooks best in a large pot of salted, boiling water for approximately 8-10 minutes (al dente), or until desired texture; it's' ideal for cold pasta salads or serving hot with the sauce of your choice. The spinach pasta is an easy way to get extra nutrients in your meal compared to regular pasta because the spinach is incorporated to the macaronis itself!

They are protein dense and pull carbon and nitrogen out of the air to both enrich the soil and to convert into usable nitrogen for plants to grow, making these crops great for biodiverse and sustainable farming. These soybeans are USDA organic and grown right here in Illinois. They come to tinyshop in a 50lb paper bag! Yippee! Use these to make fresh soymilk, tofu or miso paste. You can also soak and boil them to add to salads and soups. Soak them overnight or cook in a pressure cooker to cut down on boiling times and energy use. This Cocoa Butter comes in thin, square shapes and is great for melting into a lotion bar, among other beauty products or making chocolate from scratch! It is harvested from the fine, heirloom cacao in South America. The vendor sources from individual family farms and cooperatives ensuring fair wages are paid and sustainable agriculture is considered. Cocoa butter is produced by slowly pressing the paste to separate the oil from the solids. The pods are hand-harvested, sun-dried and lightly fermented to bring forth the rich cacao flavor and then pressed to extract the rich, luxurious cocoa butter. We had to buy 50 lbs of it in order to get it in bulk so we have it on sale to make sure we sell through it in a timely manner!

They come in two sizes: Large: 16.5 inches 11.5 inches and Small: 12 inches x 8.5 inches. disposable Tinfoil and Parchment paper is no longer needed with this new kitchen tool. But for now, the amount of seeds that were not filtered out of the black bean product gave tinyshop a lot of sorting work to just get one jar of beans on the shelf. The labor alone for such a product would have sky rocketed the prices of her beans which we just don't want to pass on to you. We instead found a Organic Black Turtle Bean supplier that packs in compostable paper bags, and is Grown in Michigan. So, yes, a little more organic waste created to bring these to the shop, but what we get is more time and lower costs to bring you an equally quality and Organic black bean! Enjoy!

These are the same beans as the medium roast, just roasted a bit longer. They are great for brewing drip, pour over or espresso. These medium roast coffee beans are great for drip or pour over and are small-batch roasted at Kusanya Cafe in Englewood here in Chicago. Kusanya is a non-profit Cafe who makes sure they have affordable pricing for the community they serve. The Cafe was eager to set up a zero-waste program with us, where we refill buckets when tinyshop needs more! And, as if there was not enough already to gush about, the beans we carry are organic... which is not very common in coffee shops. This roast was made exclusively for tinyshop. Sip, sip, hooray- with a new origin to try, from Nicaragua. The bean is medium bodied with subtle flavors of apple, plum, milk chocolate and caramel. Grind and brew these fair trade whole beans! These are the same beans as the dark roast, just roasted for a shorter time, which makes them a smaller carbon footprint! And with coffee beans getting roasted weekly, they are always super fresh!

Another new brush at tinyshop is the bottle brush from Zefiro. The handle is made from sustainable bamboo and this brush has rough, plant-based sisal fibre bristles. Chocolate is back! These chips are picked up in Melrose Park, right west of the city which means: smaller carbon footprint than our former Chocolate wafers! We chose Chips because they are a bit more versatile then the larger sized wafers. The Chocolate chips are Fair Trade, which we always seek when it is a crop that can only be grown outside of the USA. Enjoy these new Organic, 70% Dark Chocolate Chips hey that are about the size of the average chocolate chips. They make for a great snacking chocolate or baking. With these, it makes going vegan pretty easy! This chocolate comes from a Peruvian Cacao farm, which is important to us at tinyshop instead of Brazillian Farms that are much looser with their farming and logging allowances. *Add it to tinyshop trailmix to sweeten it up and get a kick of caffeine! *tinyshop is still seeking a plastic free option to chocolate! It is done so in a few ways. HSC uses an industrial facitliy in Chicagoland by adding air and heat to help microorganisms digest food waste and matter. The microorganisms release nutrients in a form that plants can absorb & use so that your home or outdoor garden plants can thrive! The process takes about 90 days and turns organic food waste back into its inorganic nutrient form: carbon dioxide, water & compound forms. The finished process is a nutrient packed fertilizer for your plants! Here are a few ways to use it!
Use 1: For an outdoor garden: Use as 'Top dressing' by applying 1”-2” to the top of existing soil every 6 months or beginning and ending of every growing season. ___________ Use 2. For potted plants or transplants, add to your favorite potting mix at 30% Compost to 70% potting soil, top soil, sand, etc. ____________ Use 3. Compost Drop at the Shop!
At tinyshop we use Urban Canopy's compost pickup service for all compostables. Customers can also bring organic waste to the shop to toss into the tinyshop bin in the alley! Simply request an access code via email or in person, and you can use the bin at anytime! If you drop off not during open hours, simply venmo tinyshop-grocer $5 for every 5 gallon bucket of organics you pour into the bin. It's cheaper than at home pickup and also cheaper than block bins! If you want to pay by card or cash, simply add a "compost drop" to your cart and the cost will be added to your order total. We find that it's easiest to collect your compostables in a 5 gallon bucket, but you can use any vessel you like! We now have two short dish brushes to choose from! The standard dish brush for dish washing and a firm version for getting those harder scrub jobs done: the pot scrubber. Both dish brushes are compostable (all but the staples holding it together) and they are a great companion to the soap bar. These brushes are an easy swap for plastic dishwashing and vegetable brushes in the kitchen and home. Both can be used for dish washing, vegetable washing and even general cleaning in the bathroom. The pot scrubber can handle those heavier tasks. The agave fiber bristles are grown, harvested, sun-dried and processed in Mexico using traditional techniques to ensure a high quality and strong natural fiber. The coconut fiber used to make the handle is harvested from coconut processing waste in Sri Lanka.

We made a custom tinyshop's essential oil fragrance blend with them and it comes to us in a bulk refillable container which is what we are all about! Each plastic swap out makes a difference! Tinyshop did reach out to Method Soap as well, but they were not interested in supplying us with a plastic free bulk option! Otherwise, we would love to support them, seeing as though they are Chicago Based! So until then, Missouri will have to do.

Say hi to a new powerhouse in the kitchen! Powdered dish soap for manually washing dishes. This comes to you in blueland's compostable pouch- so put it in a shaker bottle (maybe a left over nutritional yeast container) or add on a tinyshop shaker screen that goes onto a mason jar- and simply just sprinkle it onto your dishes, or sponge to get a powerful clean and lather. It also works well in the sink basin: just sprinkle some onto the sink and let it sit for a few minutes, and scrub clean! This is unscented and saves carbon emissions through the lack of water weight! You also just need a little bit to clean with, so use sparingly and it can last a while! Made without parabens, phosphates, ammonia, VOCs, chlorine bleach, or phthalates - it does however have SLS which is not the best thing for the environment- but has the cradle to cradle and leaping bunny certification as well as the "epa safer choice" award - this is likely better than 99% of the stuff out there.

COMPOSTABLE / JAPANESE / CHARCOAL INFUSED FACE SPONGE The Luna Charcoal Sponge is created in Japan using the roots of the konyakku vegetable, whose fibers are spun into a water-retentive puff. When used, there is a water barrier between sponge and skin which means it cleanses without scratching or irritating which makes it ideal for daily use. The charcoal naturally pulls impurities from the skin.
To use: Rub in circular motions to remove dirt from the pores. You can also use it to exfoliate by lathering it with the no tox facial bar. To activate: soak the sponge in warm water for 10-15 minutes until it puffs up and rehydrates. It will expand about 50% and be soft and squishy like sponge cake.Care: Rinse out completely, then press between palms to remove excess water from sponge and hang to dry- do not wring out as this might alter its shape. After 3 months: Sanitize the sponge or replace. If you see mold, if it smells off or has bacteria growth, do not use the sponge. (It is a natural product and can grow mold or bacteria if not properly handled). Some users have boiled it in water to sterilize it, or saturated it in water and microwaved for 20 seconds to sterilize. If you continue to squeeze and hang it to fully dry between uses, it could last for up to 6 months. Replace the sponge after 3 to 6 months.

Our oats are from Janie's Mill! They finally got the proper machinery to process oats on site in Ashkum Illinois! :) But they are on sale because I ordered too many bags and don't want it to go bad. So take advantage now to try them out. Oats are a very valuable crop when planning environmentally sustainable rotation systems. It acts as a natural herbicide and helps with nutrient conservation in soil. To create these oats, Janie's Mill first runs the MN grown Organic oat groats through a convection oven and then through a hot roller/flaker. This process gives the flakes a rich, nutty, slightly toasted flavor. They have more protein than most conventional rolled oats (16.9% vs 12%) are rich in B-vitamins, calcium, and fiber. They are more substantial than industrial rolled oats, with a heartier flavor, but you can use them as you would regular (non-instant) rolled oats -- for oatmeal, granola, cookies, breads, and other baked goods.

Our third variety of oats are now available at the shop! These Organic Steel Cut Oats are grown on a Family Farm in Quebec, Canada and packed in a 50lb paper bag. It's the only piece of physical waste created in transport and the best part is, we compost it! These oats are not only USDA Certified Organic but also picked up locally in Melrose Park in the tinyshop Electric Car. The next best thing for the environment would be to get locally grown steel cut oats, but both Janie's and Brian Severson Farms do not have the machinery to create steel cut oats! Nutritionally, these oats are the least processed form second to oat groats, which is the whole form of the whole grain oat. Make steel cut oat pancakes or muffins, or prep breakfast early and make some overnight oats! Yum.

Glycerin is known for skin-softening abilities and is an effective solvent, meaning it can dissolve substances such as stains and dirt. Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil: There is a small amount of coconut oil left in the soap after conversion to sodium cocoate. This is because we use sodium hydroxide, or lye, in the conversion process and leaving excess oil ensures there is no remaining lye in the finished product. Our coconut soap bars have only a small amount of excess oil, so they are not the luxurious body bar type and more of a 'get the job done' bar.

While Cashews are way lower on the water usage, they are always a bit pricey because of the labor involved in harvesting these gems! A heat process is used to crack open the tough shells, the nut meats are then removed and delicately hand-processed in Burkina Faso, Africa. Gebana Afrique is a Fair Trade organization that purchases organic cashews and mangoes from different rural co-operatives and associations in the South of Burkina Faso. Women serve as the majority of the workforce, doing the deshelling and hand processes. Fair Trade social premiums have benefited the entire community through adult literacy classes, new water sources, bicycle purchases, and cereal banks. The cashews photographed are pieces, which we often carry instead of whole because they are cheaper for you, but we currently have whole cashews for the same price!

We weren't sure if we should get shelled or unshelled pistachios, but we went with the ones that are more fun to eat! And this time, they are salted. These Organic Split Shell Pistachio Kernels are from a farm in California which has specialized in growing and handling pistachios since 1976. The farm has been family owned and operated for four generations. Most pistachios split naturally on the tree, and are harvested that way. These pistachios are steam pasteurized according to Organic guidelines, then dried in shell at 180 °F for 4-5 hours to bring the moisture level down to 3-4%. There are no definitive studies to say what temperature the nuts themselves reach. We just switched to salted for more pleasurable snacking!

Soy curls are a dehydrated meat substitute. They are made from whole soybeans grown in Illinois, and processed in Oregon by Butler Foods. The beans are grown organically and NON GMO. When I spoke with Butler Foods more about the product, they confirmed that Glyphosate is not used to grow them, nor are any other chemical pesticides. They opted to keep costs by not certifying Organic, but vowed to keep their growing and production process chemical free. And using Illinois grown soy assures that Soy Curls are not a contributing factor to deforesting the Amazon. (More info on that in link below) Soy Curls are a good source of fiber, they are gluten-free, and contain no trans fats or sodium. These are not "q-tip" brand... but let's be honest, it's the common name we've adopted. These bamboo and cotton q tips are an easy plastic free swap. They can even be composted! They come in a compostable cardboard box too! Plastic cotton swabs often use an adhesive and the sticks are also often plastic. It's a big single use plastic problem! So consider this easy swap! There is also a silicone type swab by Last Swab, that we also recommend, but there sometimes is no replacement for these single use swabs. Our best hack is to get a silicone one, and use these compostable swabs when that doesn't cut it. This will optimize your waste reduction!

As for the blades, you can choose the ones that are used for leaf or the albatross brand, that should fit most other types of safety razors. Just make sure to choose the base and blades to match your style razor whether it is the twig or the leaf or another brand all together, as they don't work interchangeably. For your used razors, you can use an old altoids or mint tin, maybe a plastic toothpick box and bring them into tinyshop where we will recycle them once we have enough! The Albatross are high quality stainless steel replacement blades. Each pack comes with 10 compact and efficient double-edged razor blades. We estimate each reusable blade lasts for about 5 shaves, but that depends on the but that depends on the density and thickness of the hair. So rare and captivating, black rice was once available only to Chinese emperors. And now, it's available at tinyshop! But because this rice travels further than our US grown Lundberg rices, forbidden black rice should be still consumed with the same precious thought, and treated at as a delicacy. This dark grain is packed with anthocyanins, the antioxidants found in blueberries and blackberries, and has more fiber than white rice. It’s also packed iron and magnesium. To Cook: Rinse the rice and then mix with 2 parts water. You can toss in some salt, olive oil, or butter if you like. Bring the pot to a boil, cover and simmer for about 45 minutes. Its best tender but still chewy, and not crunchy. If it needs more time, add a bit more water and keep checking every 10 minutes until it's perfect.

Epsom salts can be used in a variety of ways to promote relaxation, ease minor aches and pains, and exfoliate skin. Made from magnesium sulfate, Epsom salts dissolve easily in water, creating a luxurious bath that can help soothe tired muscles and calm the mind. This epsom salt comes from Rustic Strength and is packed into glass jars. They use peppermint and eucalyptus oil for scent! To use for general soaking to ease minor aches and pains, simply add 2 cups of Epsom salt to your warm (not hot) bathtub and soak for up to 20 minutes. We are now offering Tootsi’s Organic and unsalted pumpkin seeds. They are whole, large, dark seeds without their shells. Why do we have to go all the way to Europe you ask? Well, the largest exporter of pumpkin seeds, by far, is actually China! We looked locally, but midwest grown pumpkin seeds were impossible to find! There are pumpkins... but not the seeds! We looked west and found amazing Oregon grown ones, but we can't order small quantities of them for the shop. So we landed in Europe. Closer than China, Organic + tasty! Nutritionally, these seeds have a lot of vitamin E along with a host of additional antioxidants. A great source of phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, and copper, and a good source of other minerals including zinc and iron. Roast in the oven with some salt, or add to chocolate for a crunch or enjoy them in the tinyshop trailmix!

I have been looking for a way to help support Palestine, so I thought, this could highlight the amazing tradition and culture of the country, and also provide them some financial support. The soap is lovely. It's pure, and is made the same way it has been made for 4500 years, from just olive oil, water, and lye, then slow-cooked and cured over eight months, to create a hard, durable bar. It is Known for its efficacy in treating skin ailments like eczema and acne, it also cleans thoroughly without residue, making it ideal for both skincare and household use. I noticed extra moisture and softness in my skin after a quick hand wash. The Almond Soap is Almond oil and Olive Oil and is certified organic and has a subtle almond scent whereas the standard soap is more odorless. We are collaborating with the Palestinian soap cooperative to provide this same soap "naked," without wrapping, to reduce costs and waste further! Love love love the soap and power to Palestine.

RAW / ORGANIC / INDONESIAN / COCONUT SUGAR We shy away from brazilian grown products due to the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest for agriculture, as well as its governmental corruption which makes it hard to trust certifications, so we chose a crop that offsets more co2 than cane sugar, and does not have to be killed to harvest. This being said, it still demands land space, like all conventional agriculture and can be a contributor to Indonesian deforestation in- But this one, the trees continue to produce even after harvest making it a bit more sustainable.
Produced from the sweet nectar of tropical coconut palm blossoms. Traditional sugar farmers climb high into the canopy of swaying coconuts and harvest the sweet nectar by gently slicing the flower. Once collected, the nectar is kettle-boiled into a thick caramel and ground to a fine light brown granule. Coconut Palm Sugar is higher in protein, potassium, iron than cane sugar, and a source of vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6 and C. It is also naturally low on the Glycemic Index (GI 35), making Coconut Palm Sugar more nutrient rich than refined cane sugar. Coconut Palm Sugar can be used to replace cane sugar 1:1 in recipes and is considered a low glycemic sugar.

Moonlight Jasmine Pearl / Rare Tea Cellars
These small, green tea pearls are scented with jasmine blossoms in China. To create this unique tea, young green tea leaves are hand-rolled into delicate pearls and dried. Once dry, the pearls are gently blended with night-blooming jasmine flowers. As the jasmine flowers open, they impart their intoxicating fragrance on to the pearls. After blooming, each jasmine flower is removed by hand. This process happens a minimum of five times ensuring the delicate scent is carried throughout the pearls. We swapped these out for the blossoms this round at tinyshop because they are a bit more fragrant than the larger blossom version! Freak of Nature Oolong is a rare, High mountain oolong imported by RTC from a consortium in Anhui China. The production is limited to 100 lbs annually, so it is quite a special treat. The secret to this rare tea is the tree is shocked by temperature changes from 80 deg to 20 degrees than back to 80 degrees. This temperature change causes the outrageous buttery shortbread component to the tea. Like the ice-wine of the tea world. It is available at just a couple spots in the world! It is high in Caffeine, and should be brewed 1 tbsp to 12 oz of water at 195 degrees for 3 minutes. It can be re steeped by adding on a minute to each re steep, until the flavor is no longer present. Although this is not certified organic, Oolong producers in Wuyi, along with any teas grown at such high altitudes, generally are grown with no pesticides or fungicides as to not alter the flavor or quality of the special teas.

We searched long and far for a zero waste toothpaste option, but it seems like an untouched market in the world of makers. What we have found is tabs and powders. So we thought to try the tabs at the shop. These tabs come with or without flouride and although traveling all the way from Germany to reach our doors, the manufacturing is Carbon Neutral and the packaging is industrially compostable. So if you don't have a compost solution at home, please bring in your empties to tinyshop and we will toss it into our bin! By switching to a tab, you are using close to 80% less packaging than toothpaste. One bag of toothpaste tabs is equivalent to two tubes of toothpaste and lasts for 2 months. You also can use up the toothpaste tabs to the last tab - with toothpaste, up to 14% remains unused in the tube. Tinyshop is also working on bringing baking soda and coconut oil to the shop so paste lovers can make their own simple paste at home (that's what I use and love).
